"The role of diabetes educator is essential in a chronic disease where the primary care provider is the patient himself.." - Lynn

The key aim of diabetes education is to empower the patients with "self-management".  Diabetes education is a continuous process by which patients are taught to look for patterns in their lives and make adjustments to their habits.  A diabetes educator can help to increase the patient's understanding of disease entity; to caution them of the associated complications; to provide them skills in treatment management; and most of all, to direct them to an optimal metabolic control without losing their quality of life.
