Diabetes Assessment Program
Blood glucose is kept within a narrow range between 4 and 7mmol/L at all times. People with diabetes lose this fine control leading to raised blood glucose levels. People with diabetes often have other health problems including high blood pressure, abnormal blood fat levels and early damage to their organs, such as the heart, kidneys and brain. All these silent conditions can damage blood vessels slowly and give rise to many health problems. For example, a person with diabetes has a 20 - 40% chance of having heart disease, kidney failure or die within 10 years. People with diabetes are 4 times more likely than non-diabetic people to have heart disease and stroke, 25 times more likely to develop blindness and 20 - 40 times more likely to require leg amputation due to foot ulcers.
If you have diabetes, you are advised to have a comprehensive diabetes assessment yearly, especially if any one of the followings applies to you.
